GRAND JUNCTION — Immigration reform advocates and business owners held rallies around the state Monday to promote a “buy-cott” of businesses that promote comprehensive immigration reform.

Nearly 400 businesses, ranging from a ski area to neighborhood restaurants, have signed up for the buy-cott campaign that will run Sunday- Aug. 10. During that time, consumers are being urged to spend at the businesses that display posters advertising their support for immigration reform with a path to citizenship.

“We are asking people to vote with their wallets,” Colorado Mesa University Spanish professor Tom Acker said, speaking to a crowd of supporters Monday morning in Grand Junction.

Buy-cott rallies were being held at the same time in Denver, Pueblo and Glenwood Springs.

The buy-cott was organized by a number of groups, including the Colorado Main Street Alliance, the Colorado Progressive Coalition, the NAACP, the Colorado Immigrant Rights Coalition and Bend the Arc for Justice.

“This is more like a positive approach. We think it is very important that voices be heard in a positive light,” said Juan Gallegos of the Colorado Immigrant Rights Coalition.
