Press Release: Statement from Partnership for a New American Economy on Senate and House Introduction of Four Bills to Give Green Cards to Foreign Students Earning Advanced STEM Degrees

The Partnership commends the introduction of four bills that would keep more of the world’s top science, technology, engineering and math (“STEM”) minds here in America. The four bills, introduced by Senate Immigration, Refugees and Border Security Subcommittee Chairman Senator Charles Schumer, Senate Immigration, Refugees and Border Security Subcommittee Ranking Member Senator John Cornyn, House Judiciary Committee Chairman Representative Lamar Smith, and House Subcommittee on Immigration Policy and Enforcement Ranking Member Representative Zoe Lofgren, respectively, would provide green cards to the top foreign born, advanced degree STEM graduates of U.S. Universities whom we are currently training and then sending abroad to compete against us. The four sponsors come from both parties and both houses of Congress, showing that there is broad bipartisan support for STEM reform. The Partnership is optimistic that STEM legislation based on these four bills can be quickly passed by both houses and signed into law by the President.
